During this month of November, we are reminded to  practice the art of gratitude. But what is gratitude? It is the ability to count and appreciate our blessings, our gifts, our everyday reality. Furthermore, it is the ability to share those blessings and those gifts. It is the capacity to pass along those things that we are grateful for. Be it health, family, wealth, a good job, and the list can go in and on.  We have to be aware that not everyone enjoys those gifts, that there are many that desire them and that it is our obligation to provide those in need with the enjoyment that we have.

How can we develop gratitude and teach it to our children? By doing acts of kindness. For instance if we are grateful for always having plenty to eat in our home, why don’t we take food to the pantry in our church or homeless shelter? Why don’t we make it a point, when we go shopping with our children for our Thanksgiving meal, to buy double of the non-perishables and donate them?

If we are blessed with a close loving family, we could make it a habit to visit a nursing home and find those senior citizens that are alone without any family members to keep them company during the holidays.

Developing an attitude of gratitude is really just being thankful and showing it with our actions towards others.

Buenos Modales y el Celular / Good Manners & your cell phone!

Good Manners and Teen Use of the Cell Phone

The use of the cell phone does not have to be against maintaining good manners, unfortunately, many times we see that rudeness goes hand in hand with phone use.

It is important to point out key aspects that contribute to complying with Cell Phone Etiquette, because the statistics indicate that 75% of American kids between the ages of 12 and 17 own a cell phone.

The guidelines that we list below, are without a doubt, also necessary for adults to respect since our actions speak louder than words.

Cell Phone Etiquette:

1-Use Please & Thank you – even when you text.

2- Be Charitable –lending your cellphone to someone in need is priceless.

3- Ring Tone & Volumen should be chosen wisely.

4- Always answer your parents or guardians calls.

We also suggest to parents, that they establish cell phone free zones & times, when their children don’t have access to their phones. For instance, Meals and homework times & areas, when family is gathered to plan activities and calendars.  This allows them to become aware that the cell phone is an instrument of communication but that the person controls the technology and determines when and where he/she will use it. This is a good step towards avoiding technology addiction, which is much more frequent than we would like to imagine.

La Cortesia como Opcion de Vida/ Civility as a Life Choice

Civility as a life choice!

When we speak of civility, according to Dr. P.M Forni, co-founder of the John Hopkins University Civility Project, we are speaking about how we treat others in our daily life and that  is closely related to our ethics and values.  A large body of studies indicate that people that have social skills and highly developed relational skills have the ability to manage their relationships in a favorable manner which are crucial to our well-being and good health.

So civility, good manners and politeness are valuable and positive not only for others but for our self. People that have good manners and more successful both personally and professionally simply because they get along well with others and that opens up the opportunity for people to want to be near you, be part of your circle.

When we are children and our parents want us to practice good manners, we tend to view that behavior as something we do for others.  As adults, we should become aware that practicing civility is a very expedient way to benefit ourselves, because first of all, we understand that other’s needs are as important as ours, but from a selfish stand point, we can enjoy the benefits of having other people like us, of avoiding conflicts and of establishing good and supportive relationships and that is directly related to a better quality of life. So let’s choose civility!

As we celebrate July 4th, remember to listen respectfully, without talking, while the anthem is played, if wearing a baseball cap, remove it and face the flag with the right hand over your heart.

-Sentarse derechos

-No poner los codos en la mesa

-Masticar con la boca cerrada

-No hablar con comida en la boca

-No estirarse para alcanzar un objeto

-No olvidar decir por favor y gracias

-No levantarse sin pedir permiso para retirarse

Summer-Ideal time to establish the habit of Good Table Manners

Every day I receive calls from worried mothers that when they sit down to dinner with their children, see them showing a lack of basic table manners that amaze them.

They ask me, what can they do to change those patterns?  To reverse those behaviors that they copy from their friends and peers and that make meal times unpleasant. Instead of being the perfect opportunity to share and talk about what each family member has done during the day.

The answer is very simple, we must take advantage of the moment to reinforce the behavior that we want to become a habit.  Some parents consider that, that is not the right moment to do it. I disagree, because remember that the most profound learning takes place when we put into practice or action, what we have learned.

It is my opinión, that if we do it kindly, with good manners, based on the love that we feel for our children and based on our desire that they become the best that they can be, we must take the experiential opportunity  and show them the behavior that we expect from them and explain  why.

Summer vacation is the perfect time to do this.  First of all we have more time to share meals , we don’t have to devote time to school homework and in general we can breathe a more relax ambiance in our homes. Also, when we begin teaching table manners, we should remember that the experts say that it requires at least 21 days of repeated behavior to have it become a habit.  Summer vacation offers us more than a hundred days! So let’s get to work and start with the following basic manners:

-          Sit up straight

-          Keep Elbows off the table

-          Chew with your mouth closed

-          Don’t  speak with your mouth full of food

-          Don’t reach to grab anything on the table

-          Don’t forget to say please and thank you

-          Always ask to be excused before leaving the table
